Review
I’ve recommended this TED Talks lecture by actress, Thandie Newton, time and time again. In my opinion, everyone needs to see it because it addresses a dynamic that all of us as social creatures must face — the concept of “the self” and how it shapes out interactions with others and the world around us.
Ms. Newton also discusses how these interactions shape the way we feel about ourselves, and more importantly how to move beyond this “self” into a space where we can thrive as creative beings. Feel free to check out this short lecture below, or read the interactive transcript on the TED Talks site.
My Favorite Line:
“The ‘self’ was not constant. And how many times would the self have to die before I realized that it was never alive in the first place?”
TED Talks’ Synopsis:
Actor Thandie Newton tells the story of finding her “otherness” — first, as a child growing up in two distinct cultures, and then as an actor playing with many different selves. A warm, wise talk, fresh from stage at TEDGlobal 2011.
