Lady Gaga to discuss anti-bullying at White House
The pop singer is meeting with Obama administration staffers Tuesday to discuss her work on bullying prevention. The White House held an anti-bullying conference earlier this year, and the administration estimates that bullying affects 13 million students, or about a third of those attending school
Why would an entertainer have such access to the people who, in essence, have the greatest influence on policy and direction of the United States? An average citizen has almost no chance to meet with those at the highest levels of government or those so closely connected.
The fact is, politics plays a part in all publicly announced decisions made by politicians and their staffers. The mere fact that the discussion is on anti-bullying reflects the perception of entertainers such as Lady Gaga by the Obama administration, and many other politicians for that matter. The White House has no true plans to combat what is seen a problem by many American citizens–bullying. They, also, really do not take Lady Gaga seriously when it comes to what they would deem matters of importance.
The Obama administration’s reason for meeting with Lady Gaga is her influence on the public. She has millions of followers–has been outspoken about LGBT rights–and the acceptance of her in the White House was simply a show to fans that Lady Gaga and the current administration have a warm relationship. Being that there is an election in under a year , this translates to voters for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.
Gaga has already shown her support for Obama by attending a re-election fundraiser. Now, the Obama administration is attempting to show their support for Lady Gaga, her fans, and the LGBT community.
