O’Mara Asks Those Who Feel Zimmerman’s Actions Were Justified To Donate, But His Message Is Far More Than Dollars And Cents

Yesterday, we broke the news to you that Judge Lester granted George Zimmerman a new $1 million bond, and gave you a detailed analysis of the ruling, exposing Zimmerman’s plot to murder and get away with it. As we predicted yesterday, O’Mara began fundraising efforts, because there was no way he would agree to spend $100K of the available funds donated to Zimmerman’s legal defense on his bond.
As he has done with previous statements to the public, Mark O’Mara took to their blog and released a statement regarding the fundraising needs for the $1 million bond.
The first part of the statement was his pitch, but check out how he intends to hook all of the “patriots“–people who will be struck by his use of the word constitution–in the following statement:
We steadfastly maintain that George Zimmerman acted in self-defense and that he is not guilty of second degree murder.
In the next hours and days the defense team will be working to get George released on bail and on effective strategies for moving forward. Much of our decision making will be based upon the funds available for mounting a defense. In the days surrounding Mr. Zimmerman’s initial arrest, supporters surprised everyone with the strength of their donations.
For those who have given in the past, for those who have thought about giving, for those who feel Mr. Zimmerman was justified in his actions, for those who feel they would do the same if they were in Mr. Zimmerman’s shoes, for those that think Mr. Zimmerman has been treated unfairly by the media, for those who feel Mr. Zimmerman has been falsely accused as a racist, for those who feel this case is an affront to their constitutional rights — now is the time to show your support.
This approach is reminiscent of the race-baiting tactics used by Sarah Palin during the 2008 election. She stirred the racist sentiments that have always been just beneath the surface of the country’s two-faced reality. The use of code words when speaking to this demographic activates and inflames the racism rooted in the notion that this country belongs to them, and no Black person, no Latino, no immigrant, no Native American has ANY rights to the perceived entitlements as whites in America. These are the sentiments that Mark O’Mara taps into with his words–both the denotation and connotation.
O’Mara is well aware of the type of people who are supporting George Zimmerman. Not all, but many of the people who support Zimmerman are closet racists to begin with. They are the people who hide behind ideals like patriotism and constitutional rights, while at the same time feeling free to stampede all over the civil rights of brown and Black people in this country. These are the same people who felt that separate was equal in the middle of the twentieth century, and who yell for “those people” to go back to their countries south of the border.
The comments that many of the people who support George Zimmerman make are absolutely horrible. They say things like, “Trayvon got what he deserved,” and other incredibly insensitive things. Furthermore, you have Zimmerman’s chief spokesperson, Mark O’Mara saying similar things. In the 6/29/2012 bond hearing, he said that Trayvon Martin’s own actions led to his death. He also made a watermelon comment after the hearing in which Zimmerman’s bond was revoked for telling lies about his finances.
In addition, O’Mara’s suggestion that Zimmerman is “Zimmerman has been falsely accused as a racist,” is really just a cunning way of implying reverse-racism. This is quite laughable, since it’s Zimmerman’s own words and actions that paint him this way. People are merely pointing out the obvious–that Zimmerman racially profiled, stalked, then murdered an unarmed, Black 17-year-old.
Nevertheless, to O’Mara’s captive audience of closet racists, making a donation is a way of stopping the reverse-racism “victimization” of George Zimmerman, without having to actually go and spit in the face of Black folks like their predecessors of the 1950s.
Like it or not, what’s on trial is the value of the lives of young Black males, and whether they should be viewed as violent and suspicious on site, rather than be given the benefit of the doubt like other youth receive. Trayvon Martin has come to represent not only himself, but the masses of other nameless, faceless, and forgotten young Black males who’ve had their lives stolen away by people who saw no worth in them, and despised them because they were viewed as undesirable.
Zimmerman patriots believe it’s their constitutional right to confront someone who LOOKS LIKE they do not belong in a certain area. This is very clear when you peer into the national dialogue on immigration. The same as they feel non-English speakers do not belong in the United States, they feel certain people do not belong in their neighborhoods.
They believe it is their constitutional right to “protect” themselves from the threat of outsiders. Merely being different than the majority in the area is seen as criminal, and “self-defense” means stopping that threat, even with violence. “Self” in the term “self-defense” is interchangeable with their neighborhoods, and their nation. People who ” feel they would do the same if they were in Mr. Zimmerman’s shoes,” feel the presence of this young, Black male–an outsider–was a threat to their community, and would have outright killed the unarmed Trayvon Martin to protect the “purity” of their “self.”
In the wake of the announcement of Zimmerman’s reinstated bond, many Trayvon Martin supporters felt a sense of relief at the $1 million amount, thinking that he won’t be able to raise the necessary 10 percent to make bond. The fact is that if push comes to shove, he’s already got more than twice the amount needed to go free until the trial.
Trust that Zimmerman’s cup will runneth over with donations from people who are racists and/or have political interest in gun laws. While we are singing and marching, and making press appearances, and using Trayvon’s name for commercial purposes, they will be making their voices heard through the silent mouse clicks of PayPal donations. In fact, in the time since the announcement of his $1 million bond, more than $20K was donated to his legal defense fund.
O’Mara also made the statement that:
“We are confident that Mr. Zimmerman will be released soon, although the exact time will not be revealed out of respect for the security concerns surrounding his release. […] Mr. Zimmerman’s security team has established a safe house where he can stay until a more permanent secure location can be established.”
So, to those people who were wearing hoodies in solidarity a few months ago, are you still supporting this cause? Now that much of the sensationalism has quelled, have you moved on and forgotten the original purpose of seeking justice for Trayvon?
Was it all just bandwagon activism, or are you in this for the long haul?
